Department of Homeland Security Revamps Web Site
Posted by amyewest in News, Uncategorized on July 24, 2009
FYI, the Department of Homeland Security has revamped its web site.
Immigration statistics URL is now http://www.dhs.gov/files/statistics/immigration.shtm and
No single page for all publications.
New and/or cool: RDF embedded on web pages for import into citation tools like Zotero; lots of RSS feeds; tools for easy sharing of content.
Please sign the PACER petition
Hi all. my friend and colleague Erika Wayne asked me to post this announcement to GODORT since it is near and dear to govt documents librarians’ hearts. Thanks.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>
We crafted a very short petition directed at the Administrative Office of the US Courts to improve PACER.
The petition is online here: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/improve-PACER.
It reads:
We ask the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts to improve PACER by enhancing the authenticity, usability and availability of the system.
We the undersigned, urge the Administrative Office of the US Courts (AO) to make the following changes to the PACER system:
For verification and reliability, the AO should digitally sign every document put into PACER using readily available technology.
PACER needs to be much more readily accessible if it is to be usable for research, education, and the practice of law. Improved accessibility includes both lowering the costs for using PACER and enhancing the web interfaces.
Depository libraries should also have free access to PACER.
Please sign the petition, comment on the ideas and share the petition with your friends and colleagues! I encourage you to sign the petition. And if you have any questions about it, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Thank you,
Erika Wayne

OPAL Session on Authentication
Posted by reblakeley in News on May 14, 2009
Today I attended the “Chat with GPO” OPAL session, which focused on authentication and authentication for FDLP partners.Ted Priebe, GPO’s Director of Library Planning & Development (LPD) and Lisa Russell, the Manager of LPD’s Content Management unit presented material and answered questions.
Basically, LSCM wants to partner with Federal Depository Libraries and find ways to authenticate content hosted by the FDL partners. The digital signatures of authentication will indicate partnership with the FDL institution and the contact information for that institution. This is great news, especially for those FDLs also interested in digital deposit of government documents, a topic discussed at the recent DLC conference and of which GPO officials seem interested in pursuing as part of their distributed preservation plan.
The authentication session is archived on the GPO OPAL site if you would like to learn more.
